Líder africana

Theresa Kachindamoto, supervisora de um distrito em Malawi, país da África, se destaca como uma líder feminista ajudando mulheres e garotas de sua comunidade. Nos últimos 3 anos, ela já anulou mais de 850 casamentos forçados, colocou meninas na escola e começou uma luta para abolir rituais que iniciam crianças sexualmente.

Mais da metade das mulheres em Malawi acabam se casando antes dos 18 anos. Além disso, o país ainda conta com um baixo Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano. É por essas e outras que o trabalho de Kachindamoto é tão importante.

Ela já trabalha na área há 27 anos e ainda assim não para de conquistar vitórias para sua sociedade. Foi só no ano passado que ela conseguiu instituir a maioridade de 18 para casamentos (mesmo com assinatura dos pais). É comum meninas de 12 anos grávidas por conta disso. E agora ela briga para que essa idade seja elevada para os 21 anos.

Por ser uma região muito pobre, é grande a incidência de famílias que arranjam casamentos para meninas a fim de aliviarem os gastos da casa, deixando as despesas para o futuro marido. E as consequências de comportamentos como esses que diminuem a voz feminina na sociedade são drásticas. Uma em cada cinco mulheres são vítimas de abuso sexual. O que é extremamente preocupante, uma vez que os índices de HIV só crescem no país.

Por conta de sua conduta e postura, Theresa já foi até ameaçada de morte por outros políticos que são contra suas políticas públicas. Mas ela rebate e diz que continuará lutando até morte. E deixa uma mensagem quando entrevistada: “se elas forem educadas, podem ser o que quiserem”. Ou seja, até esposas e mães. Mas se elas quiserem.
