Brasileira ganha prêmio internacional.

Tido como uma matéria-prima revolucionária, o grafeno é um derivado do carbono, extremamente fino, flexível, transparente e resistente (200 vezes mais forte do que o aço). Considerado excelente condutor de eletricidade, é usado para a produção de células fotoelétricas, peças para aeronaves, celulares e tem ainda outras tantas aplicações na indústria.

Por ser considerado um dos materiais do futuro, ele foi escolhido como tema do Global Graphene Challenge Competition 2016, uma competição internacional promovida pela empresa sueca Sandvik, que busca soluções sustentáveis e inovadoras ao redor do mundo.

E a brasileira Nadia Ayad, recém-formada em engenharia de materiais pelo Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME), do Rio de Janeiro, foi a grande vencedora do desafio. Seu projeto concorreu com outros nove trabalhos finalistas.

Nadia criou um sistema de dessalinização e filtragem de água, usando o grafeno. Com o dispositivo, seria possível garantir o acesso à água potável para milhões de pessoas, além de reduzir os gastos com energia e a pressão sobre as fontes hídricas.

“Com a crescente urbanização e globalização no mundo e a ameaça das mudanças climáticas, a previsão é de que num futuro não muito distante, quase metade da população do planeta viva em áreas com pouquíssimo acesso à água”, afirma Nadia. “Há uma necessidade real de métodos eficientes de tratamento de água e dessalinização. Pensei que a natureza única do grafeno e suas propriedades, incluindo seu potencial como uma membrana de dessalinização e suas propriedades de peneiração superiores, poderiam ser parte da solução”.

Como prêmio, a estudante carioca fará uma viagem até a sede da Sandvik, na Suécia, onde encontrará pesquisadores e conhecerá de perto algumas das inovações e tecnologias de ponta sendo empregadas pela empresa. Ela visitará ainda o Graphene Centre da Chalmers University.

Esta não será a primeira experiência internacional de Nadia. A engenheira brasileira já tinha participado do programa do governo federal Ciências Sem Fronteiras, quando estudou durante um ano na Universidade de Manchester, na Inglaterra. Agora ela pretende fazer um PhD nos Estados Unidos ou Reino Unido, pois acredita que, infelizmente, terá mais oportunidades para realizar pesquisas no exterior do que no Brasil.
