Uma indiana que se afogou no mar ao lado dos pais e quatro irmãs em uma tentativa de suicídio em massa conseguiu chegar à praia viva, mas foi estuprada por dois pescadores que a encontraram inconsciente.

A família tinha tentado o suicídio em massa no último dia 18 de dezembro depois de ter sido expulsa de casa em Pondicherry, na Índia. A família da vítima vivia em um ashram, um tipo de pequeno mosteiro que são comuns em toda a Índia, quando foram expulsos segundo uma ordem da Suprema Corte. A mãe e duas das irmãs dela se afogaram, enquanto vítima, as outras duas irmãs e o pai foram levados para a praia em diferentes locais ao longo da costa.

A mulher, que foi encontrada a cerca de um quilômetro do local da tentativa de suicídio, relatou que foi estuprada enquanto estava deitada inconsciente na praia.

A polícia avaliou gravações de câmeras de segurança de hotéis e pousadas na área e percebeu dois homens agindo de forma suspeita no momento do ataque. Os dois suspeitos, identificados como os catadores de caranguejo S Raja, de 35 anos e um parente dele, K Vijaykumar, de 32, são de Pillaichavadi, no Distrito Villupuram, em Tamil Nadu, foram presos no dia seguinte. O superintendente sênior da polícia, VJ Chandran, confirmou que os acusados confessaram ter estuprado a mulher.

A Índia está lutando contra uma cultura do estupro endêmica que chamou a atenção internacional pela primeira vez em 2012 pelo caso chocante de uma mulher que morreu depois de ter sido estuprada em Nova Delhi.

O país fez leis mais duras contra agressores sexuais no ano passado após o estupro coletivo de uma estudante em Nova Delhi, em dezembro de 2012, mas a legislação não conseguiu conter a onda de violência contra as mulheres.

Uma pesquisa publicada na semana passada informa que 91 por cento das mulheres também não viu melhorias na segurança, apesar de uma série de medidas lançadas depois desse ataque incluindo a melhoria do policiamento, linhas telefônicas de apoio às mulheres e dos tribunais acelerados, bem como a nova lei. O levantamento, realizado pelo jornal Hindustan Times com 2.557 mulheres, também descobriu que 97% delas tinham sido vítimas de algum tipo de assédio sexual.
