BOSTON – Um pâncreas artificial portátil, construído a partir de um iPhone modificado, regulou com sucesso os níveis de açúcar no sangue em pessoas que têm diabetes tipo 1, segundo uma pesquisa publicada no “The New England Journal of Medicine” no domingo.

O pâncreas artificial é a última versão de um dispositivo que vem sendo redesenhado por muitos anos. O sistema consiste em um iPhone 4S acoplado a um monitor de glicose, duas bombas, e reservatórios de insulina e glucagon. Um sensor embaixo da pele de um dos lados do abdômen mede a glicose no fluido entre as células, o que corresponde de perto aos níveis de glicose no sangue. O sensor libera uma leitura para o smartphone e o software do smartphone calcula a dose de insulina a cada cinco minutos. O medicamento é, então, bombeado através de tubos finos de dois pontos de infusão minúsculos incorporados sob a pele do outro lado do abdômen do paciente.

Testes durante cinco dias

Os desenvolvedores testaram o dispositivo durante cinco dias em dois grupos de pacientes, 20 adultos e 32 adolescentes, comparando os resultados com as leituras obtidas com bombas de insulina convencional que os participantes estavam usando. Os adultos testados tinham, cada um, a constante atenção de uma enfermeira, e eles ficaram hospedados em um hotel para o estudo de cinco dias. A insulina funciona em conjunto com glucagon, um hormônio que aumenta o açúcar no sangue. Juntos, eles mantêm o açúcar no sangue em uma faixa saudável.
