Rosa Parks, costureira negra do estado do Alabama (EUA), em 1955, fez um gesto simples, mas de grande significado: recusou-se a ceder seu lugar num ônibus para um homem branco. Naquele tempo, a segregação racial era permitida pela lei estadunidense. Pelo ato, Rosa foi detida e levada para a prisão. O protesto silencioso da costureira propagou-se rapidamente pelos Estados Unidos e foi o pontapé inicial de um boicote em massa que durou 381 dias contra as companhias de ônibus, apoiado pelo reverendo Martin Luther King, e dando início a uma grande reviravolta na história do país e do mundo. Ela enfrentou ameaças de morte, humilhações e precisou mudar-se por não conseguir emprego. No entanto, seu papel já havia sido feito e, por isso, ainda hoje ela é considerada a mãe do movimento moderno pelos direitos civis.

Quando Rosa Parks saiu do Alabama, já era considerada um símbolo do movimento liderado por Luther King e fazia parte da National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, uma das mais respeitadas organizações de luta pela igualdade racial nos Estados Unidos. Ela é considerada o estopim para que a população se revelasse cansada da opressão. Foram precisos 41 anos para que o governo daquele país reconhecesse o ato de Rosa e a premiasse com a Medalha Presidencial pela Liberdade, em 1996. Em 1999, o Congresso outorgou a ela a Medalha de Ouro, a mais alta honraria civil, prêmio que recebeu das mãos do então presidente Bill Clinton.

Rosa morreu em Detroit, em 2005, aos 92 anos, de causas naturais. O Museu Rosa Parks, inaugurado em novembro de 2000 em Montgomery, lembra a luta dessa mulher e tem atrações como o ônibus de assentos “reservados para brancos”. Os visitantes também podem assistir a filmes que contam como era a vida dos negros na época da segregação racial. Além de ter inspirado Martin Luther King para o movimento que ficou marcado pela frase I have a dream, recentemente o presidente norte-americano Barack Obama citou a costureira como uma mulher que ajudou a mudar os Estados Unidos.
