Amelia Earhart

Primeira mulher a pilotar um avião sozinha pelo oceano Atlântico.

Além do ato de extrema coragem e ousadia para os padrões da época, início do século XX, ela também foi uma grande defensora do direito das mulheres.

A piloto nasceu no estado de Kansas, Estados Unidos, em 1897, e desde a infância possuía gosto pela arte de se aventurar e liderar. Com apenas 23 anos, ao acompanhar seu pai em um campo de pouso onde Frank Hawks (famoso piloto americano) lhes proporcionou uma emocionante viagem de 10 minutos em um avião, ela se apaixonou por voo e decidiu, então, virar piloto.

Após um tempo trabalhando para adquirir dinheiro equivalente ao pagamento do curso de aviação, ela enfim começou seu treinamento. Dois anos depois Amelia bateu um record mundial de aviadoras, voando a 14000 pés de altura.

Em 15 de maio de 1923, Earhart torna-se a 16ª mulher a conseguir uma licença de voo da Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). E foi também a primeira mulher a receber a “The Distinguished Flying Cross” – uma condecoração militar atribuída a qualquer funcionário ou membro alistado das Forças Armadas dos Estados Unidos, reconhecidos por ato de “heroísmo ou conquista extraordinária enquanto participava de um vôo aéreo, após 11 novembro de 1918.”

O jornal americano Boston Globe citou-a como  “uma das melhores aviadoras dos Estados Unidos”. Entretanto, em 1937, Amelia desapareceu no oceano Pacífico, perto da Ilha Howland enquanto tentava realizar um voo ao redor do globo. Foi declarada morta no dia 5 de janeiro de 1939. Ainda assim, sua carreira, modo de vida e a forma como desapareceu fascinam as pessoas até os dias de hoje.
