Eleonora Mendonça

A primeira maratonista do Brasil

Ela venceu barreiras além do esporte para tornar-se a primeira brasileira a correr uma maratona olímpica, prova que disputou  nos Jogos Olímpicos de Los Angeles, em 1984.

Muitas pessoas vivem uma vida plena – daquelas que temos orgulho de conhecer e contar. Algumas provocam impactos positivos de dimensões tão grandes que suas realizações precisam ser celebradas. Este é o caso de Eleonora Mendonça, a primeira brasileira a disputar uma maratona em Jogos Olímpicos, em Los Angeles, em 1984. O que essas histórias inspiradoras têm em comum? Falam de gente que encara desafios, que corre atrás dos próprios sonhos, que enxerga problemas como obstáculos a serem vencidos – e não como barreiras insuperáveis.

Pioneirismo dentro e fora das pistas

Depois de décadas de proibição, 1984 foi o primeiro ano em que mulheres foram admitidas na prova de maratona olímpica – até então, o Comitê Internacional permitia apenas provas femininas de até 1,5 mil metros. Além de obter o tempo classificatório para competir, Eleonora precisou superar a resistência do Confederação Brasileira de Atletismo, que se recusava a enviá-la para os jogos. Quem hoje assiste a competições pela TV, acompanha provas de rua ou frequenta espaços públicos propícios para a corrida pode ter dificuldade para acreditar, mas, há menos de 40 anos, pioneiras como Eleonora precisavam derrubar tabus para garantir igualdade de acesso ao esporte.

“Quando cruzei a linha de chegada, aquele momento foi o final de uma luta esportiva, como atleta, mas também de uma luta como ativista. Eu estava muito feliz. Eu fiz o meu papel”, comenta a maratonista. Aos 35 anos, Eleonora já tinha garantido seu nome na história do esporte no Brasil, mesmo antes de chegar a Los Angeles. É que sua empresa, a Printer, foi responsável pela realização das primeiras provas abertas de rua no país, no final dos anos 1970. Em 1979, a Printer organizou a primeira maratona do Rio de Janeiro. De um público de cerca de 400 participantes, Eleonora estima que houvesse aproximadamente 20 mulheres entre os inscritos.

Em 1981, em parceria com a Avon, veio a organização da primeira corrida exclusivamente feminina do Brasil. Como parte de um circuito internacional criado sob o patrocínio da marca de cosméticos. “Para os homens, a corrida não era novidade, então queríamos criar uma oportunidade para atrair as mulheres para o esporte. Eu acreditava que elas tinham interesse, mas se sentiriam mais à vontade em um evento feminino”, explica Eleonora, que apostou com a então diretora da marca que o Brasil bateria o recorde de participantes – e ganhou. Em 1983, foram 6,5 mil corredoras em uma prova.

Desbravando o mundo

Eleonora não espera as coisas acontecerem: ela vai atrás do que quer e faz acontecer. “Acho que isso é uma coisa minha, sempre fui assim”, conta. Aos 12 anos, quis aprender a dirigir. Aos 24, organizou uma viagem de Kombi até os Estados Unidos. No dia 13 de agosto de 1973, partiu do Rio de Janeiro com a mãe, uma tia e uma amiga americana – ela e a amiga se revezavam na direção: “Gosto de viajar, gosto de dirigir, gosto dos Estados Unidos. Eu quis unir essas três curtições!”, lembra Eleonora, que planejou a aventura buscando mapas nos consulados dos países que pretendiam visitar (nada de GPS ou celular em 1973!).

A Kombi foi adaptada para que pudessem dormir e dar carona – uma prática comum na época. “O que eu achei mais bacana é que eu sabia que cada dia seria diferente do anterior. Conheceríamos uma nova cultura, um novo povo, uma nova maneira de viver. Esse tipo de conhecimento não tem preço, não tem escola, não tem universidade que ensine o que aprendi”, reflete. Depois de três meses e meio na estrada, Eleonora retornou ao Rio de Janeiro para concluir a faculdade de Direito.

Para quem gosta de desbravar o mundo e, quando criança, chegou a sonhar em ser aeromoça, o céu é mesmo o limite: nos anos 1990, a destemida Eleonora decidiu ir além. Fez um curso de piloto de avião: “A sensação é maravilhosa!”. Medo? Nem pensar!

Legado

Entre tantas realizações, o que mais emociona Eleonora é ver o quanto a corrida conquistou os mais variados públicos: “Quando eu vejo, no Brasil, corridas com 5, 10 ou até 15 mil participantes, dá uma gratificação enorme. É uma realização que começou com aquela sementinha que plantamos lá em 1978, quando éramos os únicos a organizar corridas de rua no país. Ver esse movimento hoje é uma coisa maravilhosa”.

Aos 68 anos, a aventureira, ativista, empresária e maratonista diz que não gosta de ficar olhando para trás, mas admite: “A gente fica pensando: quanta coisa!”. E, claro, ainda vem mais por aí: o Instituto Eleonora Mendonça acaba de ser lançado, com o objetivo de apoiar o atletismo brasileiro. Com sua série de realizações, Eleonora nos prova que não existe momento certo (ou errado) para iniciar novos projetos, para superar limites, para assumir a responsabilidade de fazer os próprios sonhos acontecerem.
