Uma pesquisadora brasileira ganhou o prêmio Lush, a maior premiação internacional para iniciativas alternativas aos testes em animais. Bianca Marigliani, doutoranda em biotecnologia pela Unifesp (Universidade Federal de São Paulo), foi escolhida na categoria jovem pesquisador e vai levar 10 mil libras para estudar um novo tipo de método in vitro, totalmente sem uso de animais no processo, para avaliar o risco de alergia provocado por agentes químicos.

Neste ano, a empresa britânica de cosméticos e a Ethical Consumer distribuíram 450 mil libras em prêmios, um recorde. Desde 2012, são recompensados trabalhos nas áreas de ciência, treinamento, conscientização pública, lobby regulatório e jovem pesquisador. Também saiu pela primeira vez o prêmio da caixa preta, para uma descoberta considera essencial na área: o mapeamento total de como um químico tóxico leva a uma reação alérgica da pele.

Os jurados, de diversos países e diferentes áreas de atuação, consideraram que o trabalho desenvolvido pela brasileira deu um passo além na questão do uso de animais em experimentos, pois levantou uma questão nova até para cientistas e ativistas acostumados com o tema.

Marigliani trabalha para adaptar células a um meio de cultivo sintético, ou seja, sem soro bovino fetal. A maioria dos testes in vitro usa pelo menos este elemento de origem animal, tirado do sangue de fetos vivos por punção cardíaca sem anestesia — algo considerado cruel. Segundo ela, até 2 milhões de fetos bovinos são usados por ano para obter o soro.

“Além de ser antiético, o soro usado para cultivo de células apresenta problemas técnicos –por exemplo, risco de contaminação. Já temos meios sintéticos disponíveis, que, embora sejam mais caros, podem substituir os métodos tradicionais. Já temos mão de obra qualificada, só precisa treinamento”, explica a bióloga.

O avanço dos testes in vitro é primordial para aqueles que defendem o fim dos testes com animais, por isso a importância de premiar pesquisas na área. Para eles, é possível substituir em larga escala os animais por uma bateria de testes no nível celular ou em humanos voluntários –embora parte dos cientistas discorde.

“Sempre há dois lados: existem aqueles que estão abertos às invocações e os que preferem continuar usando os métodos que sempre usaram. Mas quando as pessoas entendem os métodos alternativos in vitro e os avanços da ciência, elas percebem que eles são melhores não só em relação aos animais, mas tecnicamente, na segurança dos produtos para uso humano. Células humanas respondem diferente de animais”, ressalta Marigliani.

Calcula-se que 115 milhões de animais sejam testados por ano no mundo. A União Europeia aprovou em 2009 uma legislação que proíbe testes de cosméticos em animais. Em 2014, São Paulo foi o primeiro Estado brasileiro aprovar lei parecida, após a polêmica do caso Royal.

Segundo Rob Harrison, diretor do prêmio Lush, a ciência molecular avançada, com a evolução da genética e da computação, já pode substitui os testes em animais, considerados pelos ativistas pouco confiáveis. “Modelos 3D de cultura e sistemas de ‘corpo-em-um-chip’ [método que implanta células humanas em chips] são apenas alguns dos projetos vibrantes que estamos recompensando neste ano”, diz.

Segundo o FDA, a agência federal americana que controla alimentos e remédios, nove em cada dez drogas testadas em animais falham com pessoas. O caso mais famoso de teste em animais que não deu certo é o da talidomida.
